Improving Lives

Adverse Drug Reactions are the 4th leading cause of death in the U.S., causing over 100,000 deaths per year and resulting in over 2 million hospital visits annually.

Pharmacogenomics, (PGx) according the the National Institutes of Health, is the study of how a patient’s genes affect how he or she will respond to certain medications.

PGx testing is cutting edge technology that allows you to offer precision, personalized medical care to your patients.

Listen to what some leading providers are saying about PGx testing…

Today more than ever before, there is a role for genetics in routine medical practice. Modern healthcare providers and their patients have access to a huge variety of genetic tests. These tests lead to insight that healthcare providers combine with other clinical information. Giving a much broader understanding of each patients unique situation leading to enhanced care.

Kate Ragan is a pharmacy student who looks beyond the medications. She knows firsthand how important genetics are and how big of an impact they can make, particularly in the treatment of an illness. She hopes to advance the healthcare field through the use of pharmacogenetics. Take a look at the importance of the individual. No two people are alike – and their medical treatments shouldn’t be either. Kate Ragan of the UMKC School of Pharmacy explores how the emerging and exciting field of pharmacogenomics can reset our traditional approach to medicine.

A Stanford professor of bioengineering, genetics and medicine, Altman leads Simbios, an NIH Center for Biomedical Computation, and holds a BA from Harvard College, an MD from Stanford Medical School and a PhD in medical information sciences from Stanford. Altman received the U.S. Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, a National Science Foundation CAREER Award and Stanford Medical School’s graduate teaching award.
